The "Tai Ping Ching Chiu" festival is held by some families or village clans in Hong Kong. People believe that it is an effective way of communicating with Heaven and God. In return, Heaven and God reciprocate.
Conservative Confucianist rites are performed
during worshipping. As the structure of community becomes more
complicated the role of recreational theatre (opera, puppets) becomes more important
and the importance of traditional rituals declines.

After the seven-day rites period, the large "Paang" temporary structure is modified to be used as the opera theatre. The raised area originally partitioned for the Taoist rites, puppet plays and the ancestral altar is converted into the opera stage. The rest of the structure becomes a raised audience seating area divided into left and right halves.
People not willing to pay the Chinese Opera fee can still watch it from outside the
compound but it is quite far away. Some guards are checking tickets and preventing free
riders. Some people still manage to sneak when guards lose attention.

Sometimes guards are also present in front of Cantonese Opera
backstage. Negotiation is then required to be allowed to take pictures of
the performers.
