In 1960s Thai Action movies genre was dominated partly by espionage thrillers. Under Thanin Kraivichian's government (1976-1977), Thai people were tought to be afraid of communism and that the way to survive was to protect the nation, the religion and the monarchy. This idea was present in many Thai films during the 1960s and 1970s (following the communist victory in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia). After the military coup in October 1976 made timely by the deaths of students in the Thammasat University Massacre, villains in Thai actions films (หนังบู๊) were communists, usually from Vietnam. Heroes were soldiers or members from right wing groups such as the Village Scouts (ลูกเสือชาวบ้าน). Popular plot was a secret policeman or soldier going to Isan to destroy a communist invasion. In the late 1980s, after the Communist party of Thailand collapsed, this plot became less popular.

He wishes to take revenge and sends ruffians to kill him in his hotel. Paeng - 1960 cliche of small virtue lady featured with a cigarette - is supposed to seduce Han Meuang while Pol shall shoot him. It fails and Pol is captured by police thanks to Han Meuang and Thong Bai. Han Meuang's father is unhappy with his son (เสือร้าย) and wishes to kill him as he is now a convict (โจร). Soi (สร้อย), daughter of Saen, helps to hide Khom in her room and asks her father to recruit him. Sia (เสี่ยมังกร), another local mafia leader involved in illegal sawmills, wishes Han Meuang to join him but Saen's ruffians injure Han Meuang following a trap. They need to get a cargo of weapons to be sold illegally. But police is aware and tries to catch them. There is a police spy within the seven guys (มีหนอนบนไส้). A police inspector is captured to find who the spy is. It is Dam Prasakorn (กรมสืบราชการ). The police inspector (สารวัตร) finally succeeds to flee and it is discovered that three of the former fugitives are working for the police. During World War 2, a man betrays his country (ขายชาติ) and even kills his wife Narinee as she refuses to keep silent. The father then disappears. His own daughter flees and is rescued by a young man called Boripat, who put her in a well off family. She is renamed Lamphap. A few years have passed. Lamphap (Suthisa Putnuch) is a beautiful grown up lady. Boripat plans to become deputy (ผู้แทน) in Phatalung province. Boripat and Lamphap love each other. Cheutchalao (Kaenjai Meenakanit), a jealous lady who wishes to marry Boripat, shows to Boripat’s mother a picture of Lamphap’s mother. Is it good that Boripat as a future deputy marry a country traitor? Following a night with Boripat, Lamphap flees away as she is ashamed of her background. Boripat looks for her. When he is aware of her parents’ background, he breaks up with her and finally marries Cheutchalao. Lamphap is followed by her father's bad reputation. Boripat has become a member of parliament. Cheutchalao introduces Khun Yousapong (Prachuap Ruekyamdee), who is a salesman, to Boripat. Boripat needs to pay back the funding he receives from him through some sales advantages with government projects. Boripat rejects and resigns as he refuses to betray his own principles. Cheutchalao is very upset as Yousapong is in fact her hidden lover. She even refuses to keep the child she is currently having with Boripat! Cheutchalao has an argument with Boripat’s mother causing her to fall from the stairs and dies. Boripat then indulged in alcohol and, being sick, decides to die in the place he met Lamphap the first time. He dies in her arms. Kenang is the child born of their brief union. Many years have passed. A young lady called Pen (Pawana Chanajit) stops by the village due to a flat tyre and is helped by Kenang (คนป้า). Pen is daughter of the salesman Yousapong. Salesman is still with stepmother (แม่เลี้ยง) Cheutchalao. Yousapong has always been concerned about money only (ไม่รู้ค่าความรัก). Pen dances on a show and displays her great dancing performing skills (รำไทย) to pay back his father as studies compensation. She gets a reward and wishes to offer it to Lamphap but Cheutchalao prevents her to do it as Lamphap is daughter of a country traitor (เป็นกรรม). Chatkalin, Lamphap’s second son (Choomporn Theppitak) doesn't want anybody to mention he is Lamhap's son anymore as he wished to marry Pen. He is in fact Boripat and Cheutchalao's son. Cheutchalao left the child in an orphanage and Lamphap, having pity, raised him. Well off people (ผู้ดี), having status, are seeing down poor people. As a revenge Kenang kidnaps Pen and brings her to a remote place near seaside. Chatkalin burns Lamphap's house as retaliation. Kenang, having finally freed Pen, arrives on time to save his mother. Following a fight with Chatkalin, a passer-by is shot. They all accuse Kenang. Lamphap chases everybody. A policeman offers her an opportunity to clean her name but she has to give information regarding the secret place where her traitor father and his team are hiding. After reaching the place in the mountain, Lamphap’s father wished to test her if she is not a spy. She shall kill her own son, Kenang, as he has been accused by Cheutchalao, Chatkalin and Yousapong of having killed the father’s own son, i.e. the passer-by. Only Pen defends Kenang. Lamphap has to do a sacrifice (เสียสละ), i.e. Kenang’s life against the four other lives (Cheutchalao, Chatkalin, Yousapong, Pen). Finally one of the ruffians revolts for the sake of his country preventing Lamphap to make an impossible choice. Bad characters are punished. Some episodes were cut in this Lepso VCD release, i.e. one episode where Sombat Methanee is singing and another climax episode when the ruffian forces the mother (Suthisa Putnuch) to shoot her own son (Sombat Methanee) but finally changes his mind. Sombat Methanee plays both the father Boripat and the son Kenang. This 1960s movie shows that faithfulness to country is more important that faithfulness to own family. It is typical of many 1960-1970s movies, which featured nationalist elements against the red communist threat. พญาโศก is a less known good movie from famous director Cherd Songsri. It also includes many references to the Thai royalty.

Seua (เสือ)(สมชาย ศรีภูมิ) is Sing's younger brother and becomes a bad guy under Kam Maen's guidance. Finally the father dies and legates everything to Sing. Saeng Rawee and Kam Maen try everything to destroy the testament (พินัยกรรม). Ruffians ask for the testament from doctor Phan. As he fights back he is shot dead and his wife is kidnapped. Phum Reun (ภุมริน), a friend, informs Sing regarding the latest news regarding his father's death, the doctor death and his young brother becoming a bad guy (โจร). Sing wants to bring him back to the right path (สายเลือดเดียวกัน). The two brothers fight as Sing doesn't want his brother Seua to become a bad guy. He tortures Sing to know the truth. Thae Phee is ready to everything (ยอมเป็นเมีย) to avoid Sing to become blind. But hopefully his friends can help and free him. The movie finishes with various shootings in which Sing's friends die, Seua dies and Sarawee dies by saving Sing's life against Kam Maen. Villagers are fighting against the traitors and the Thai flag is shown as the final image. The reds menace was present during decade 1960s in Northeastern region of Thailand. So such films were part of governmental propaganda. The movie is more than 2 hours and 20 minutes long. Some parts of the movie are missing and have been cut. Either they were in bad condition or Lepso Studio has to cut the movie to fit into a limited VCD format. There is no more original soundtrack as it is a 16mm movie. A huge quantity of Thai gold is stolen. An American agent recruits some Thai mercenaries to build a tough team of experts. The team is responsible to get the gold back in Thailand. The gold is currently in Communist Vietnam. The team is parachuted there. A young woman is waiting for them to guide them into the jungle. On their way they met two other women that are trying to free their father imprisonned in the jungle by Vietnamese soldiers. It seems that one of the three ladies is a spy. Many difficulties happen before being able to retrieve the gold and not all of them can go back alive to Thailand... The movie "Gold" was the first big success of Chalong Pukdeewichit. The film was a phenomenal success locally and made a profit internationally. It became the first Thai film to be widely sold to international markets. Later on "Gold 2" (Gold Raiders - 1983), "Gold 3" (The Lost Idol - 1990) and "Gold 4" (In Gold We Trust - 1992) were even released. Chalong Pukdeewichit put in place an effective marketing strategy, i.e. a large budget, sex, violence and involvement of a famous internationally known actor to attract buyers. In movie Gold, American actor Greg Morris from the Mission Impossible TV series played alongside with Thai stars Sombat Methanee, Krung Srivilai. Same recipe was applied later to "H-Bomb". The Mission Impossible soundrack is even used a few times during the movie.

Reddy tries to meet Koo’s daughter, Erica. Reddy and Erica had a former romantic relation and still love each other after 4 years of separation. Zee (Krung Srivilai) is like a son for Koo and also his favorite henchman. Zee loves Erica also. He doesn’t trust Reddy and believes he is a undercover CIA agent. Two secret agents of Thailand are also supporting Reddy in his quest. Koo's mistress is played by Pawana Chanajit, the Pearl of Asia. She is in fact working for Fuji group. Koo doesn't want his daughter to see Reddy. An impressive car chasing and shootings takes place during Chiang Mai Songkran festival between Ruddy, Erica and Fuji members. Reddy is captured while entering Koo’s house. Erica helps Reddy to flee as he has been drugged. Reddy finally finds the missile after multiple fighting scenes against Fuji group and against Zee. Zee really loved Erica as he sacrifices his own life to avoid her being shot by Fuji members. This movie is fully packed with actions sequences such as train collision, boat chase, shooting, car chase, helicopter gunned down... The movie includes multiple treacheries and double agents. It is nice to see so many Thai actors in this international Hong Kong / Thai movie. Two international stars Robert Mitchum and Olivia Hussey brought more international exposure to this movie. In 1970s Krung Srivilai always played the good guy but in this international production, he is playing well the bad guy. The English dubbing is quite weird but the movie has really a nice budget. This movie is a Bangkok film production. It is available in Thailand as “ตัดเหลี่ยมเพช” and in Hong Kong on VCD format under the title "H-Bomb".

Ruffians attack a bus and put fire into it. Hopefully military can help on time but some passengers die. Who was behind the ruffians? A local villager Chat is having financial difficulties. Nemana and Data, owners of the local sawmills, lend money to poor people with high interest. Chat bought a truck. He is close friend with Tai (Sombat Methanee), who is a village scout (ลูกเสือชาวบ้าน). The Village scouts was a right-wing group sponsored by the King and Queen of Thailand to promote national unity in 1970s. Villagers are helping each other. Due to debts (หนี้) Chat needs to give his rice fresh crop to Nemana. Poor (จน) people just work for the rich! Nemana gives him back the truck against his wife’s rice fields guarantee and allows him to cut trees in forest. He befriends with Prachan, who is Nemana’s close associate. Despite Nemana's promise, some other ruffians try to catch Chat so he has to fight back for his life. As he shots two men, he has to flee to Bangkok. They lie to him as the ruffians are not dead. He is driving a taxi in Bangkok. He gets framed by Prachan who puts drugs in his car (เล่นละคร) in order to increase Chat’s dependence to him as Chat needs to pay back his gratitude. He accepts to join their team. Nuan and Tai marry. Chat, due to easy money and lust, forgets his pregnant wife Bua (กรุงเทพสวรรค์คนมี นรกคนจน, คนลืมตัว). Back to the village Chat complains about the corruption of officials and how to benefit from it! Tai wishes to fight against this corruption that is bad for the country, fight against the bad parliament members. Tai and Chat disagree so fight (คนโทรยศแผ่นดิน). Nemana and Tai have a disagreement regarding rice selling. Tai pushes his democratic concept as villagers can sell to anybody (สหาย). It is democracy versus communism. Nemana proposes to share power and influence (แบ่งอำนาจ). As Tai refuses, they kidnap Nuan, his wife, who is teacher in order to force Tai to join them. Tai refuses their ultimatum and decides to act at nighttime. Faced to a Buddha statue, Tai prays in front of the Thai King and Queen pictures. Thai Buddhism, the monarchy and the nation were high symbols against Communism in 1970s. Patriotic songs are played in the background (รักชาติ). Tai has to use a floating wing similar to a hang-glider to enter silently their camp. He succeeds to release Nuan but they are captured while trying to escape from the camp. Chat's mother dies on a mine while trying to convince her son (คนขายชาติ) to release Tai. Through his treachery he loses his mother (สร้างกรรม). He changes side so frees Tai and Nuan. Chat dies while holding the Thai flag. Tai takes over the Thai flag. Meanwhile villagers holding Thai flags and singing patriotic songs go towards the camp. Thai army is joining them. The ruffians are defeated and some of them injured or killed. Through high compassion, soldiers give help and priority to treat them. Tai successfully removes the red (communist) flag and replaces it by the Thai flag generating cheers and dances. The song “Nak Phaendin” was released in 1975. It is was a patriotic song (เพลงปลุกใจ) against the communist influence (คอมมิวนิสต์). During 1975-1980 years, Thailand was surrounded by Communist countries (Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam) and was at high risk to fall also. This movie from an historical point of view shows nicely this trouble period and how the government propaganda was done.

Cheutchai (Sombat Methanee) spends a lot of time to read James Bond novels so behaves similarly and weirdly (บ้าๆ บอๆ). This movie reminds of French movie “L'animal” with Jean-Paul Belmondo. Cheutchai is mistaken as another Cheutchai by some ruffians at Bangkok airport. He is brought to a meeting of a mysterious secret organisation (องค์กร). They are all wearing animal mask to hide their real identity and call themselves by number. Traitors are killed by a black panther. Cheutchai is given a mission by sexy number 9, Sareuthai, to kill a politician. He is recruited as a hitman but doesn't shoot the politician so causing the ruffians' ire. He flees through a two driving sides Mini British car. There is a car chase through Bangkok, then until the top of the Golden Mountain and then through a side car. Cheutchai needs to hide in a brothel to escape the ruffians and then in a gogo bar. He finally flees with dancer Aranya and takes refuge in her home. Cheutchai asks help from Sareuthai. She suggests him to kill the organisation leader and gives him the building map. Sareuthai is later killed by the black panther due to her betrayal to the organisation. Cheutchai decides to enter in the building at nighttime but he is captured. Being joked on his qualification as Thai scout (ลูกเสือ), he punches back. During 1970s the Thai scout organisation was seen as a protector of Thai kingdom against external threats such a red communists. He succeeds to escape thanks to Aranya. Police arrives on time to rescue them. Cheutchai and Aranya neutralize the organisation leaders (ทำร้ายชาติ) at Don Meuang airport. In 1976 Don Meuang airport was still used for international travel. The second soundtrack in Isan language adds many oral jokes absent in the original Thai soundtrack. The movie features also a funky 1970s music soundtrack. It is produced by “Methanee film” company and Sombat Methanee is also the film director. It is a two hours movie.

Some Thai Soldiers are fighting at the border against some communist invaders. Phet (เพชร) and Chat (ชาติ) are two key members of this unit. They deserve a rest. Phet brings Chat back to his village. Meanwhile the village headman (ผู้ใหญ่) is killed by a professional killer (มือปืน). Khun Thana, a local influent man, is responsible of his death. Mae Ploy, a child called Haeng, Phet and Chat are witnesses of the murder. Thana wishes to suppress all witnesses. As the future of the country (ชาติ) is endangered if children don't go to school, Phet and Chat decide to protect Haeng and the school. Luckily for the two soldiers, the two teachers, Porn (ครูศิริพร) and Plang (ครูปราง), are also beautiful ladies. Phet captures one of the killer in the city. Thana tries to use his influence to release the killer. Phet meets Lady Kanya (กันยา), a local company owner, having issues with local mafia. Jealousy starts between Kanya and Porn regarding Phet. Following a gun fighting in the school, a student is killed. A car chasing happens in the city and finally the child killers are punished. Phet is captured but succeeds to escape. Phet is played by Sorapong Chatree with a beard. A barber scene is inspired from Sergio Leone western spaghetti movies. Kanya (ขายชาติ) proposes to Phet to steal army weapons but he refused and is held prisoner. As Phet has disappeared, Chat and the two teachers look for him. Chat helps to release Phet. Two former solder friends (ทรยศชาติ) are now working for Thana. They complain that Thai government didn't support them properly. Finally following Phet's touching words, they change side and sacrifice themselves for the nation (เป็นคนไทย). The two former soldiers sacrifice their life to destroy the ruffians’ explosive stock. It is a typical action movie from 1980s with nationalist aspect and highlighting children education importance for the future of the country. It is only a 68 minutes movie so part of the movie might have been cut.

The movie "เสือภูพาน", released under VCD by Lepso ltd, lasts only 56 minutes so for sure the original movie was cut a lot so making the whole story a bit difficult to understand. The movie เสือภูพาน was already released by Happy Time ltd so this version might be longer. Another online version lasts 1h07mn. It was also released under as an international title as "Spy Inferno" (1h26mn). It is a mix of Thai footage and Hong Kong footage done by Filmark production. The movie is in Spanish language. The Thai footage lasts more than one hour. The picture quality of "Spy inferno" is much better than the Thai VCD release. Some scenes are present only in the Filmark version and some only in the Thai VCD version. The Thai actors are not even mentioned in the credits. Soldiers led by Phupan (Krung Srivilai) are attacked by traitors. As their leader is injured, they have to retreat. This group of traitors is led by a big chief (Boo Wibunnan). The big chief leader wears Vietnamese clothes with a communist red star. They are traitors to the Thai nation. There is a secret informer (หูตา), called Number 13, inside the ruffians’ team. The traitors move to another secret place but Bua leads the Thai army there. He meets Catherine, his girlfriend, who is a US doctor working at the Thai Cambodian border. Colonel (ผู้พัน) Oliver asks Don (Likit Eakmongkol) to build a team in order to get back the statue from Cambodia. Part of this team are Krung Srivilai and Rith Luecha present in previous opus but with different roles. Christopher (Christoph Klüppel) is also part of the team. He was selected by Chalong Pukdeewichit thanks to his impressive bodybuilding. 1M baht is promised for each. Half now and half when the job is completed. Another group is following Oliver also. They threaten Katherine to get information. To force Kirt to join his team, Oliver kidnaps his daughter. Kirt has to accept to lead them through the Thai Cambodian border as it is full of mines. Meanwhile Katherine is going to Cambodian side to help poor people per her previous promise to Sorapong. It reminds the real story of Phanom Rung lintel stolen during Vietnam war and given back to Thailand in year 1988. Sayan Chantaraviboon and Apiradee Pawaputanon are part of the Red Khmer army. Sorapong's men are all killed during an embuscade and Katherine is captured. The Vietnamese soldiers wish to know why Oliver is back. Despite being tortured, Oliver refuses to speak. Kirt tells the Vietnamese about the gold statue (เทวดารูปทองคำ). The Vietnamese leader (นพพล โกมารชุน) plans to bring it back to Vietnam. One Cambodian man warns Sorapong that this statue belongs to Cambodian heritage and that it should stay here. They attack the truck convoy and the mercenaries free themselves. Sorapong asks mercenaries to join his team if they want to spare their life. If they survive, they will get freedom. The Khmer soldiers and the mercenaries attack the Vietnamese camp. Heavy fightings happen as Vietnamese soldiers have tanks. The Vietnamese leader succeeds to flee with the golden statue through an helicopter. Oliver sneaks in also. The statue finally falls in the lake and the helicopter crashes in the mountain. Chalong Pukdeewichit uses same recipe as previous sequels, i.e. famous Thai actors to be able to attract Thai audience and quite famous foreign actors to attract overseas audience.

Sorapong is reluctant as he could face former former relatives. Which side would Keng choose (ทรยศแผ่นดินไทย)? Finally he lets him go. Aya and her students friends are captured while trying to find the remaining of her father's helicopter in the forest. While dispatched by helicopter on zone, Keng is captured. His real father remembers the pendant he gave him 15 years ago. Keng helps Aya to find the helicopter of his father and to perform proper Buddhist ceremony with the body remains. Keng's brother, who is a policeman, extracts him from the tribal village. Keng is back in Thai army. A government amnesty is given to all who joined the guerilla war. Hardcore communist members hesitate to surrender. Keng is looking for his father and sister. Other guerilla members don't trust Keng, who is a Thai soldier. Finally Thai soldiers attack the village. Keng's sister is killed and the father is injured. The guerilla is defeated. While raising the Thai flag, one Hmong tribe member shots Thai soldiers causing the Thai flag to fall. Keng prevents the Thai flag to hit the soil but gets deadly injured. He makes his father promises to stop fighting. This nationalist trend movie with many Thai stars from 1970s recalls movies from this era with stress on Monarchy and sacrifice to protect Thai Nation.

Most Thai action films were still made with low budgets and targeted at local audiences. Many of those movies deal with Thai cowboys and cattles in Isan (อีสาน) area in the Northeast of Thailand.

This old Thai western movie, taking place in Chiang Mai area, has a complete new soundtrack. A man is surprised sleeping in the forest. He is injured by a young lady called Chalong (Petchara Chaowarat) believing he is a thief. Nobody knows his name and why he is coming here. His real name is Pen Moradok (Sombat Methanee). In fact he is sent by central government to neutralize a local mafia head called Salapan. Pen meets many girls, i.e. Chalong, Fong and Peri, owner of a bar who all love him. Pen receives a threat to leave city within 24 hours or face death. Fights happen between Pen and Salapan's ruffians. Peri dies when helping to fight the ruffians. Finally Salapan is captured and Pen wins Chalong's heart. It is a typical 1960s movie where the leading actor seduces many actresses (James Bond syndrome?). This is a very old Thai movie compared to Thai standards. The digitalization has been poorly done. The movie is only 15 fps and some scenes are strangely cut. It should be seen for historical purpose and enjoy the chance to see famous stars Petchara Chaowarat and Sombat Methanee acting. This movie follows the Thai traditional drama precepts with a clown always following the leading actor and the leading lady having a maid of honor.
