The Central plains area is the area around Bangkok. It is often called the rice attic of Thailand as there are three rice harvest per year.
- Rice fields
A "HANG NA" (ห้องนา) is a shelter used by Thai farmers.
At noon, they have a rest there as weather can be very hot. It is also the place to
have lunch together, a shady spot to smoke, to talk.
Such shelters disappear slowly as more machines are used so less farmers are needed to
take care about rice fields.
Rice fields are still a strong option for Thai farmers as Thai government is trying
to increase the abroad selling price.
Huge green rice field that will give bountiful harvest in a few weeks.
There is a need to ensure that water is still present in the field to avoid bad
harvest.
This rice field has been harvested a few weeks ago. The land will rest a few
weeks before starting planting rice again.

A movie called เพลงของข้าว / The songs of rice
was released in year 2014.
Before buffaloes were used to cultivate rice fields. Nowadays
most farmers are using iron buffaloes, i.e. rototillers.
The songs of rice (เพลงของข้าว) is always
a special moment to hear when the wind is going though rice fields.
- Canal network
There is an impressive canal network in Central Plains area. It goes though the countryside to ensure
rice fields, fish ponds can receive enough water.
On rural side in Central Plains, there is a huge canal network to ensure
water can reach all rice fields or fish ponds.
These canals can help during high floods to allow, in theory, a better
water flow.
Along this canal, there are some kind of fish-traps
to catch fishes wandering around.
Before when road network was under developped, there was a canal network
to go to market or bigger city.
The big pipe is used to bring water from the canal to the fish / shrimp pond.
- Ponds
Quite many ponds can be found around Nakhon Pathom area. Some ponds are fish ponds or
shrimp ponds.
With high densities of fishes per square meter, aeration is required
to prevent oxygen depletion.
Thoise dragon water jars (โอ่งมังกร) are famous for its dragon pattern. In the past, skilled ceramists were mostly chinese. It is used to store rain water. Those jars are covered by wooden or metal lids in order to protect the water from falling leaves.
This huge fish pond has even a farm over its shore.
All those ponds often a serene view at sunset time. It is very quiet
and only flying dragonflies can be seen.
- Lotus field
Lotus field in Nakhon Pathom. Lotus are often used for donation to
Buddhist temples.
In summer, lotus flowers can be seen throughout vast fields.
Those farmers are having a lotus field. They are getting lotus
and leaves to sell them on the market on the next day.
