Hau wong birthday festival happens yearly on lunar Month 6 Day 6.
Hau Wong festival (侯王寶誕) is celebrated in a few areas in Hong Kong, i.e. Kowloon City
and on Lantau island (Tai O and Tung Chung).
The Hau Wong festival in Tai O is one of the few festivals in which
there is enough space to see everything without difficulty. Most of the
tourists go back at evening time so it is possible to enjoy the festival
with locals.
The Hau Wong festival in Tai O with its temporary bridge is unique in Hong Kong
and worth a visit.
Chinese Cantonese opera is one of the highlights of Hau Wong
deity birthday festival.
Chinese Cantonese opera is played during afternoon and evening time.
Performers wear beautiful outfits.
The Chinese opera theater, made of bamboo, features many comfortable seats!
According to Paul, the deity between Hau Wong's birthday festival in Tung Chung, Lantau and
Hau Wong's birthday festival in Tai O, Lantau is the same. The main difference
is people and community. In Tai O, it is mainly or a good number of them are fishermen.
At Tung Chung they are mainly farmers from small village clans.
The highlight is the construction of a temporary bridge to cross
the sea so that the deity can assist to Chinese opera.
As Hau Wong birthday traditional festival in Tai O (Lantau Island) is based on Lunar calendar,
the date changes every year. In year 2011 it was from July 03 to July 06. In year 2013 it was from
July 13 to July 16.
Tai O is a fishing town located in the northwest of Lantau Island
and is more than three centuries old.
Visiting this festival is worth to take a day off in case it is a week day.
Normally the weather is also very hot (33 degrees) as the even happens in July.
A few photograhers carry heavy backpacks with dSLR and lenses but worth to shoot
the Chinese opera singers.
Along Tai O village houses, leaflets promoting the Chinese opera performance
can be seen on houses. It is a free event.
Hau Wong deity birthday in Tai O village on Lantau island. Hau Wong temple is one of
the numerous Chinese temple in Tai O.
Tai O is worth to visit for its stilt houses, fishing boats, numerous temples
and old houses.
Hau Wong festival festival is over. Temporary bamboo structures have been
dismantled.
Some workers are removing the bamboo poles one by one. They will be reused in
another traditional festival.
The temporary bridge from the Hau Wong temple to the opera theater is also
dismantled. Tourists have now to walk a long way to cross the river.
The ground is covered by bamboo poles. Tai O village can be seen in the background.
As the festival is over, The Hau Wong temple is now back to quiet mode
until the next traditional festival.

In year 2015, the temporary bamboo theater
moved to another location. There was no more temporary
bridge. It was mainly to save money.
