Buddhism is Thailand main religion. 94 % of Thai people are Buddhist. So many huge Buddha statues can be seen in Thai landscape. One of the most famous place in "ISAN" area is Erawan cave ("THAM ERAWAN" - ถ้ำ้เอราวัณ) near Nong Bua Lamphu city in Udon Thani province.
The main Buddha statue is located inside a cave on a top
of a mountain. This statue can be seen from far away.
A six hundreds stair is used to climb the mountain.

Climbing six hundred steps is a difficult task in Thai
mountains. The heat and humidity are oppressive but it is worth seeing
the beautiful view and the cave.

Every famous Thai temple origin is based on a legend.
A few centuries ago, a white elephant died here.
This is based on the fact that one huge rock inside the cave
looks like the Erawan Elephant.

The cave has a high ceiling with beautiful stalactites and stalagmites.
Adventurers shall not forget
their spotlight. Light is switched on in the cave only during
the entering of the rainy season called "WAN KHAO PHANSA"
(วันเข้าพรรษา)
and for the exit of the rainy season called "WAN OK PHANSA"
(วันออกพรรษา).
