When Bangkok was built more than 250 years ago, the designers created a vast system of canals spreading out from the river. Kings used to use them to travel through the capital. But as Thailand began modernizing, the barges had fallen out of use. King Bhumibol revived the tradition in 1957, to celebrate the 25th century of the Buddhist era. He also began smaller processions for religious services during the rainy season.
For special royal events, the King will
go through Bangkok on the river Chao Phraya on his royal
barges. When the royal barges are not used, there are stored in
the "Royal barge museum" on the shore of the river. Each time
the royal barges go out, this is a big event watched by many Thai
citizens.
