The north end of Lantau island, including Ma Wan island, has remained almost untouched during many years. It was leased to Great Britain in year 1898 for 99 years, but little development was done until 1960. Then large land reclamation and resettlement started and the rural character of the island has begun to change rapidly.
Greenery and old-style village houses can still be found on Ma Wan island.
Despite completion of modern infrastructures, this island still retains a simplistic
rural look of a fishing village.

Ma Wan island's only residents used to be a small fishing community on its northern shore. Life there was rustic. When the new airport was built on the Lantau island, its approach bridge passed over Ma Wan island, making it easily approachable from the city. A resort called Park Island sprang up there. The fishermen were rehoused in a specially built modern village with a brand-new temple.
