THE BIG BUDDHA

Lantau island is the biggest island in Hong Kong SAR. It includes famous places such as the world's largest, seated, outdoor bronze Buddha, Hong Kong airport, Disneyland resort, rural town Mui Wo and traditional Tai O village.

The easiest way to go to bronze Buddha statue is to go by bus through impressive mountainous roads or through the Lantau cable car if it is functional. Another challenging but rewarding way is to hike through the Lantau trail.

Many hikers wish to reach the top by daybreak, so most people set off in the dark in order to arrive at the summit by dawn to see the sun rise.

The Lantau Peak is actually made up of a pair of peaks, one is known as "Fung Shan" (male phoenix mountain) and the other is "Wong Shan" (female phoenix mountain), together they form "Fung Wong Shan".

In year 2005, Hong Kong Disneyland, the joint venture between the Walt Disney Co. and the Hong Kong government, opened its new park on Lantau Island.

The Po Lin monastery was built in the 1920s. It is a big complex of temples and pavilions that attracts local pilgrims and tourists.

The landmark Big Buddha was opened in 1993 and sits atop a misty plateau at Ngong Ping, where the monastery is located.

In 1963, the construction of the Hall of Great Hero commenced and was completed in 1970.
