King Chulalongkorn day commemorates his wise reign over Thailand.
During his reign, Thailand did not become a French or English colony even if
Thailand lost his leadership over Laos, Cambodia and the northern
provinces of Malaysia.
During the reign of Chulalongkorn King or Rama V, Thai people started to adopt the European dress culture.
During his reign, Thailand became a modern country. He abolished slavery.
Thailand's most prestigious university is named after his name, i.e. Chulalongkorn university.
The custom to eat with spoon and fork was brought by King Rama V from a trip of Europe in the 19th century.
Nowadays many shops sell pictures, amulets, pins and stickers of King Chulalongkorn.
His picture can often be seen near the picture of current Thai King, i.e. Rama IX.
Since Rama V (1853 - 1910), school is mandatory for both boys and girls. Since that time schools are under the state rule.
King Chulalongkorn replaced the old legal system with a western one.
When government stability is endangered in Thailand, local people often pay respect to King Chulalongkorn as he represents steadiness.
