Fishing industry is very strong in Thailand. It is one of the main exports.
This fish symbol ("PLA TA PIAN" - ปลาตะเพียน)
can often be seen in cars. Taxi drivers often have one.
It is a symbol hopefully bringing wealth and prosperity.
The "PLA BEUK" (ปลาบึก) is a big fish that lives in the rivers. It can be up to 3 meters long and with a weight up to 300 kg. The fish can be found in the Mekong river. Since a few years, the fish can now be bred. But once a year, there are still ceremonies in Nan area (north of Thailand) held by Thailand and Laos. This fish is still considered as a spirit. So local fishermen must ask the permission before catching it.
Such fish symbols can often be seen in Chinese temples in Thailand.
In Chinese culture, the fish symbolises wealth and prosperity but also
strength and bravery.
One of the most famous seafood market can be in Samut Sakhon (Mahachai market)
in Samut Sakhon province. It is a good place for cheaper and fresh seafood.
Recently there was a lot of critical reports on Thai fishery industry
as it had been using illegally many migrant workers from Cambodia and
Myanmar (Burma).
The working conditions were very hard for those migrant workers. Thailand promised to tackle fishing industry slavery.
A big aquarium can be visited in Prachuap Khiri Khan. It is
called Waghor Aquarium.
